Art can be a messy business. So, what do artists wear in the studio? Paint splashed tee shirts, clay spattered jeans or torn aprons? These paint speckled boots belong to Mendelson Joe, a great Canadian original who has established himself as a consummate multi-media artist.
If you would like to take a walk in Mendelson Joe’s boots, you can. They are for sale with all the proceeds being donated to Muskoka Arts & Crafts, a not-for-profit visual arts organization that raises all its own operating funds. “Part of my philosophy of life is to help each other,” explains Mr. Joe about his artistic donation. “I’ve been donating art and music to all kinds of causes throughout my life since I started to play music professionally when I was 19. I’m 76 now. Back in 1992, Algonquin artist Jane Gray suggested to Muskoka Arts & Crafts that they show my work while I was still living in Toronto. I felt lucky to have a solo exhibition at the Chapel Gallery and I believe in reciprocity and charity. It’s how I choose to live and why I wanted to donate my paint-laden boots as a fund-raiser for Muskoka Arts & Crafts.”
