I have many memories of camping with my family in Algonquin Park. We relished the starry nights and sitting around campfires while listening for the distant howl of wolves. I am sure we were not the only ones doing our best to howl back when we did hear them.
This painting is composed of multiple layers of acrylic painted over a topographic map that I have affixed to a birch panel. The negative painting technique that I use allows me to reveal the subject on the unpainted portion of the map while also applying layers of colour to the background. I enjoy combining the landscapes of an area with the map that represents it, evoking memories and creating a sense of connection to our familiar natural world.
Topographical map and acrylic paint. Size: 20"h x 20" x 1.5"d.
