My initial sketch of this scene was to be looking down from a height to the water’s surface, with lily pads speckled around, grasses poking through. I watched the water gently move around the Lily pads as air bubbles made their way to the surface.
While contemplating the scene, my mind switched the view to one from beneath the water, looking to the surface towards the light. I feel that I am moving with the bubbles, upwards through grass and leaves as they make their ascent to sunlight. It is a peaceful, calming and thought-provoking scene.
I used only palette knives in the process, scraping and spreading the paint to capture the movement of the water and plant materials. Bright bubbles gives the painting energy as it reflects the sun’s light.
