Wenge is sometimes called African rosewood or faux ebony and it is native to the Republic of Congo. The final is turned from a piece of chacte viga which is a tropical hardwood from Mexico and Central America. It is an orange-coloured wood with fine streaks of red. Even a small piece of chacte viga can be expensive to purchase.
When I scored this piece of wenge wood, I was challenged. Since wenge is classified as a sensitizer, it can cause allergies to develop with repeated exposure so, to turn this piece, I had to wear an N95 face mask. Wenge wood when turned on the lathe, gives off splinters and slivers that caused nasty infections in my hands and arms. It is a challenge to turn, expensive to buy and valuable to own.
