I work instinctively and allow paintings to evolve and tell their stories and associations. This painting came from a very tender place when I worked with youth in a high school. I am a retired social worker. This painting evoked memories of the youth I worked with who were struggling to find their place in a world that didn't always make room for them as transgendered, LGBTQ2S and yet I saw them refusing to hide, finding their allies and their voices. Teaching us that the world and its ways is too narrow and rule bound. I remember these brave warriors, the canary in the mine, singing out that something is wrong and needs to change. I also don't romanticize as I witnessed the cost of being the canary, at the end of the day all we really want as humans is to be seen and loved and met with open arms.
