When I turn applewood, my shop smells of apples. I got this wood from the Algoma Orchard when it was being cut down to make room for new housing. It takes a long time to dry and is prone to cracking as it dries. Apple is a highly prized wood for woodturning. You can get spectacular results and always a one-of-a-kind piece with colouring that improves with age.
Applewood is a hard wood with a dense woodgrain. In a woodturning, you can see the dark and light streaks showing the woodgrain as well as radical colour changes ranging from cream to caramel to a dark rich toffee colour. Large art pieces turned from applewood are limited to the size of the apple tree trunk or the size of the leading branches. Even an old apple tree does not grow an over large trunk.
