I love watching dragonflies darting around over the lakes and rivers of Muskoka. They have an other-worldly appearance with their translucent wings and iridescent bodies. This painting is one a larger series of many different varieties from Canada and beyond. I chose to create them as individual portraits so the viewer could appreciate their unsual colour and character.
In almost every corner of the earth, dragonflies have been represented in art forms. And culturally, they commonly symbolize change, transformation, adaptability, self-realization. and understanding the deeper meaning of life. On a more practical level, dragonflies often devour their own body weight in mosquitoes daily, endearing them to Muskoka year-round and summer residents.
