Searching for ways to illustrate the interdependence, interconnectedness and fragility of all life on the planet, I created an ocean-like backdrop filled with DNA strands. Scientists believe life emerged from the primordial oceans and therefore we share an ancestry with all life. In these days of global warming and extinction of species, whales, often referred to as ecological engineers, seemed the perfect focal subject for the painting. The title, Genesis, comes from the Greek, gignesthai meaning to be born. This idea of birth or rebirth reflects the return to healthy populations of a once endangered species (the Humpback Whale) and in the painting my hope for our planet.
