Mars Platter is an unusual piece of wood from the Redwood Forest in California. It is a light weight, even grained wood that is hard to acquire and expensive to purchase, even a small piece, at the specialty lumber store. Imagine my excitement to score a redwood burl. Examine this piece and you will notice the scramble of grainlines in the bottom of the platter.
Redwood, or Sequoia, is an evergreen species that can grow to 300 feet high and a 12 foot diameter. The wood has a red coloured heartwood that is prized by woodturners for its close woodgrain. A burl is a growth that forms large knobby bulbs on the trunk of the tree. These burls are caused by injury, fungus, virus, or insects then the bulb grows and the result is a mash of disorganized grain patterns inside the burl.
Size: 15" diameter x 1.5h" and 1/4" rim width.
