This bowl is distinctive for the thick walnut bark on the rim and also the end grain orientation showing the center core of the tree in the bottom of the bowl. The bark, with its spikes and valleys, reminds me of the peaks of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta.
The wood for this bowl is from a walnut tree that was culled in Whitby. It had particularly thick bark and I just knew it would be spectacular as a live-edge bowl. Walnut is a native hardwood with deep rich brown tones. Peaks is an art piece of great value due to the difficulty of turning such thick bark. The shine on my art is my signature. It is endurable and there is no need to reapply. I have been woodturning for 11 years and my first pieces have the same shine as they did on the day they were finished.
Live edge walnut end-grain gowl.
