At the end of the summer season, the sun’s evening glow catches the tips of dry and decaying reeds. Mounds of grass poke through a mirror-like water surface, with reflections of evergreens and blue sky. It is a safe haven for the red-winged blackbird who relaxes safely on its perch, camouflaged by the reed bed’s textures.
I am excited by the patterns created in the grass. By painting swiftly with palette knives, I experienced that sense of urgency with each blade of grass in Reed Bed. Using limited colours for the quiet air and water, patterning captures the excitement of the many directional lines in the clumps of reed grasses resting in the water.
