While on a day trip to Algonquin Park, we stopped at the Canoe Lake General Store and I discovered these brilliant yellow mushrooms amongst the rocks near the entrance. For over 40 years, I've taken pictures of fungi and at times incorporated them into paintings. These specimens stood out as beautiful subjects for a new piece of art.
Recently, I've learned a great deal about the importance of fungi and knew as I worked on this piece that I would paint more of them. Fungi are vital to life on Earth. We need them along with bacteria to break down organic matter and release carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus into the soil and the atmosphere.
