One of my very favourite plants is the sumac and it is probably one of my most favourite subjects to paint. When fall comes with a particularly brilliant sun, the sumacs display a stunning array of glorious colours. This one fall as I was driving south on hwy 11, I was gobsmacked by a roadside of absolutely breathtaking colours from blues to purples to oranges, yellows, pinks, reds and greens, all overlapping each other in a riot of eye popping hues. I find watercolour doesn't do them justice; oil or acrylic works better for me. I loved overlapping the leaves and again glazing with a whitish acrylic to portray a lace effect. I wanted the leaves to dance with the lace on the textured canvas.
