In the heart of Muskoka lays some of the most spectacular scenery on Hwy 141 beginning on the outskirts of Raymond, a sprawling rural community occupied primarily by farmers and families of original settlers who treasure the beautiful landscapes and where we are now fortunate enough to call home. The majestic granite ridges and long scenic views across rolling hay fields within the valley offer endless inspirations of interest to one that finds great comfort exploring within the natural surroundings. As I generally gravitate towards awkwardly twisted and imperfect features in the raw pieces of wood it forces me as an artist to remain fluid in my visions and expectations of the finished product. To work towards a flawless piece or to embrace the natural flaws and often embellish those flaws to create an absolutely fascinating and truly one of a kind work of art that displays grain distortions caused by stress within the tree or virus fighting burl wood. Creating interesting wall art pieces such as this functional serving platter that exhibit intriguing shape and texture elements as well as exposing the unique grains' inner glow or chatoyance is the final goal. This piece has it all. "New Beginning", shows the harshness of the environment in which it was found, the beautiful colour hidden within and the emergence of the vibrant green found in our spring forests. A large maple burl with bark inclusions and scarring has wonderful grain patterns that reflect light from every angle, the large carved black and bronze beads surround the central natural coloured platter, the contrasting outer landing has been enhanced with many hand rubbed layers of dye and finally the carved and charred natural edge reminds the viewer of the rawness of the original piece of wood.
